Impact of the War

Upon the Muslim Community:

An Afternoon in the Islamic Center

Sunday, April 1, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

920 South Harrison Road, East Lansing

The Islamic Center, along with the Greater Lansing Network Against War and Injustice, will host a special gathering to share thoughts on the impact of the war in Iraq and of the post-9/11 situation in the U.S. upon the Muslim population. In particular, we are interested in addressing the effect of the rise of tensions and xenophobia around the issue of "terrorism" upon our Muslim neighbors in our community and in our state. We are concerned that life has become more difficult for our Muslim neighbors. Amidst many reports of tensions or abuses generated by the U.S. Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act, and reports of schisms between Shiites and Sunnis in Dearborne, and we wish to take the occasion both to inform ourselves, to communicate with each other, and to express our solidarity with the Muslim community.

Three Speakers:

  • Mohammad Alomari - From the 'Life' organization in Southfield, Mr. Alomari will present as a representative from the Muslim Community.
  • Liz Harrow - Former president of Kehillat Israel, Mrs. Harrow will present as a representative from the Jewish Community.
  • Mr. Shareef Akeel - A civil rights attorney from Michigan who has represented Abu Ghraib detainees.

Following the presentations, the speakers will form a discussion panel to address questions and conversation with attendees.
